Pavel Telicka

Pavel Telička was born in 1965 in Washington, D.C. and he graduated from the Law Faculty at the Charles University in Prague in 1986.
His professional activities started in September 1986 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became legal adviser within the Czechoslovak delegation for the negotiations on the Europe Association Agreement. From 1991-1995, he held different positions at the Czechoslovak/Czech Mission to the European Communities in Brussels, including Deputy Head and Head of Mission.
In 1995 he became Director of the European Communities Department and the following year Director General of the Integration Section (EC, NATO, UN) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In January 1998, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and shortly after Chief Negotiator for the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union and the following year he was made appointed State Secretary for European Affairs.
Following the conclusion of the accession negotiations in December 2002, he moved to Brussels again to take up the post of Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the European Union. He has devoted almost his entire career to European integration and in 2003 was awarded by President Vaclav Havel a Medal for his contribution to the integration of the Czech Republic to the European Union.
In February 2004, he was nominated by the Czech Government for the post of Commissioner (for the portfolio of Health and consumer protection) but following a government crisis he did not continue in the subsequent Barroso Commission.
Pavel then set up BXL Consutling Ltd, an EU Affairs consultancy, which has recently been closed down due to his candidacy to the European Parliament. From May 2005 he served as a Member of the Board of Directors of Notre Europe foundation, founded by Jacques Delors. Since July 2005 until June 2014 he also served as European Coordinator for one of the priority projects within the TEN-T:- ‘Rail Baltica’ and North Sea Baltic Corridor. Since November 2007, he has also been a member of the High Level Group on Administrative Burdens (advisory body to the European Commission) chaired by Mr Stoiber.
During the years 1997-2001 he was very active in the non-profit sector as a board member of several NGOs (including: Tomas Bata Foundation, National Training Fund, Centre of Good Will, where he has been personally involved in a charity project called “Signed by heart” supporting disabled children and later also people with Alzheimer disease.)
In July 2014 after the winning the European elections in the Czech Republic as leader of ANO 2011, Pavel Telicka along with his colleagues joined the ALDE Group, and was elected as its 2nd Vice-Chair up until January 2017 when he was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament. He is a member of the Parliament´s Bureau, the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) and substitute of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE).
Pavel Telicka is married with two children. He is keen on sports; rugby, fitness, cross-country skiing and biking. Furthermore, he is fond of literature, travelling and driving and is an avid dog lover. He follows the principles of healthy lifestyle and was Chairman of Healthy Choices International Foundation.
